Appreciation To Our Teachers
I have often looked back on our school years and marveled at the time and effort our teachers put into the school's extracurricular activities -- activities through which I grew, learned, socialized and otherwise benefited greatly. Here are a few of my memories:
- Jim Davidson and any of us who could help spreading sawdust, putting up rink boards, stringing lights, heating the 'rink shack', and flooding the rink. Playing hockey and having skating parties -- going round and round (holding hands with my latest crush) all to the 'Wings of A Dove'. There used to be an open spring behind the rink shack from which we'd dip pails of water and carry them onto the ice. Later we had a gas-powered pump. The hours Jim Davidson contributed to that effort must have totalled in the hundreds.
- Teachers helping our grade 7 class make a flour-and-water relief map of the continent of South America in the basement of the Baptist Church.
- John Campbell helping us with the grade nine Centennial Project on the Community of Geary, for which we won the provincial prize, got a trophy, and a cultural trip to Saint John. On that trip, never to be forgotten experience of Freddie Bradford turning the bus at the top of Fort Howe! He was good, for sure.
- All of the teachers rehearsing us for the Christmas concerts, especially Mrs. Fraser.
- Rehearsing for the provincial music festivals in Fredericton, we sang "The Lord Is My Shepherd" on the stage of the Playhouse.
- Teachers like Helen Petryshen, Donald Pert, and Sandra Emmet chaperoning the Christmas Parties where there were girls, spot-light dances, and eats.
- Movies shown by Jim Davidson maybe on a Friday or Saturday evening -- I remember "Drums Along the Mohawk" with Henry Fonda(?) and "The Long, Long Trailer" with Lucy & Desi.
- The winter carnival activities including the snow sculptures -- packed, glazed, carved, and painted -- under the supervision of John Campbell, for one.
As children and young people are prone to do, at the time we took these things for granted: only later did we realize the extent of the effort.
